SEWARD HENRY MINER was the son of Austin Thomas Miner and Caroline Amelia (Brown) Miner. Seward was born on a farm on East Main Street Road, Town of Batavia, Genesee County, New York, on March 2, 1856. The 1870 and 1880 federal census reports list Seward, along with his parents and siblings, in Batavia.

Seward married Ella Teege of Batavia at the Baptist parsonage in LeRoy, Genesee County, on November 24, 1882. The Rev. C. M. Rupe performed the ceremony. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Teege, Ella was born in Titusville, Pennsylvania, on October 29, 1866. Her parents were born in Germany.

Seward and Ella had three children: Edith A. Miner, Mabel M. Miner and Arthur Earl Miner.

The 1900 federal census lists Seward with his wife, Ella, and three children, Edith Miner, Mabel Miner and Arthur Miner, in the Town of Batavia. Seward was a farmer. He lived in Batavia when his father died on Thursday, July 27, 1905.

The 1910 federal census lists Seward H. Miner, 54, farmer; Ella Miner, 44, his wife; Mabel Miner, 23, daughter; and Arthur Miner, 20, son, on East Main Street Road, Town of Batavia. The report says that Seward and Ella had been married for 26 years and that Ella was the mother of three children, all of whom were living.

Seward lived in Batavia when his brother, Donnelly S. Miner, died on Wednesday, November 13, 1918, and when his mother died on Wednesday, February 7, 1923.

Seward was a member of Stafford Grange; Lodge 197, Independent Order of Odd Fellows; and the Elks. Ella was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Batavia and Class No. 7 of its Sunday School; Stafford Grange; Batavia Chapter 267, Order of the Eastern Star; and Batavia Rebekah Lodge 37.

Seward died at his home on East Main Street Road, Town of Batavia, almost directly opposite the one in which he was born, at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26, 1927. He had been ill for some time. After the funeral at his home at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, July 29, 1927, Seward was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Harvester Avenue, Batavia. The Rev. Charles C. MacLean, D.D., pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Batavia, officiated at the services.

Seward was survived by his wife; his son, Arthur Miner of East Main Street Road; two daughters, Mrs. Frank R. Young (the former Edith Miner) of Niagara Falls and Mrs. Herbert F. Baker (the former Mabel M. Miner) of 100 Summit Street, Batavia; four brothers, John and Elliott Miner of the Town of Stafford, Sherman Miner of Batavia and Otis Miner of Millers Falls, Massachusetts; two sisters, Mrs. John Totterdale (the former Florence Miner) of the Town of Stafford and Mrs. Charles Rykert (the former Mary Miner) of 10 Wood Street, Batavia; and seven grandchildren.

Ella married Cyrus Tower at Batavia on April 27, 1929. (Her obituary gives an incorrect date.) Ella died at her home on East Main Street Road at 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, 1932. She had been ill for some time.

After the funeral at her home at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 16, 1932, Ella was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Batavia. The Rev. Charles Chalmers MacLean, D.D., pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Batavia, officiated at the services.

Ella was survived by her second husband, Cyrus Tower; a son, Arthur E. Miner of East Main Street Road; two daughters, Mrs. Frank R. Young (the former Edith Miner) of Niagara Falls and Mrs. Herbert F. Baker (the former Mabel M. Miner) of 100 Summit Street, Batavia; seven grandchildren; her stepmother, Mrs. Mary Teege of 116 Summit Street, Batavia; a sister, Mrs. Arthur T. Mason of Rochester; and several nieces and nephews.

EDITH A. MINER was the daughter of Seward H. Miner and Ella Teege Miner. Edith was born in Batavia, Genesee County, New York, on March 15, 1884. The 1900 federal census lists Edith, 16, with her parents and siblings in the Town of Batavia. Edith was a student.

Edith married Frank R. Young. They lived in Niagara Falls when her father died on Tuesday, July 26, 1927, and when her mother died on Saturday, May 14, 1932. Edith later owned Miner Manor in Batavia. Frank and Edith had three daughters: Margaret Young, Helen Young and Caroline Young.

Edith was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Daughters of the American Revolution and the Board of Directors of Genesee Memorial Hospital in Batavia. Frank died in 1952.

Edith died at the age of 94 at the Cupola Nursing Home in Brockport, Monroe County, New York, on Saturday, March 3, 1979. After the funeral at the H.E. Turner & Co. Inc. Mortuary in Batavia at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 6, 1979, Edith was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Harvester Avenue, Batavia.

Edith was survived by three daughters, Mrs. Charles Marshall (the former Margaret Young) of Nokomis, Florida, Mrs. Edwin Tillman (the former Helen Young) of Miami, Florida, and Mrs. C. Robert Mansfield (the former Caroline Young) of Slatington, Pennsylvania; a brother, Arthur Miner, of Woodstock Gardens Apartments, Batavia; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

MARGARET YOUNG is the daughter of Frank R. Young and Edith A. Miner Young. She married Charles Marshall. Margaret lived in Nokomis, Florida, when her mother died on March 3, 1979.

HELEN YOUNG is the daughter of Frank R. Young and Edith A. Miner Young. She married Edwin Tillman. Helen lived in Miami, Florida, when her mother died on March 3, 1979.

CAROLINE YOUNG is the daughter of Frank R. Young and Edith A. Miner Young. She married C. Robert Mansfield. Caroline lived in Slatington, Pennsylvania, when her mother died on March 3, 1979.

MABEL M. MINER (9) was the daughter of Seward H. Miner (8) and Ella Teege Miner. Mabel was born in Batavia, Genesee County, New York, on December 12, 1886. The federal census lists Mabel with her parents and siblings in the Town of Batavia, Genesee County. Mabel was a student.

The 1910 federal census lists Mabel with her parents and brother, Arthur, on East Main Street Road, Town of Batavia. Mabel married Herbert F. Baker. Herbert was born in Rochester, Monroe County, New York, on February 22, 1887. The 1917 “Farm Journal Directory of Genesee County” lists Herbert F. Baker and Mabel M. Baker, his wife, at 24 Thomas Avenue, Batavia. They lived at 100 Summit Street, Batavia, when her father died on Tuesday, July 26, 1927, and when her mother died on Saturday, May 14, 1932.

Herbert was in the insurance and real estate business. Herbert and Mabel had two sons: Roger Miner Baker and Dean F. Baker.

Both Herbert and Mabel were members of the First Presbyterian Church of Batavia. Mabel, a 50-year church member, served as president of the church’s women’s organization and was a member of the church’s Class 4. She was a regent of De-On-Go-Wa Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, and a member of the Wednesday Night Bridge Club.

Herbert died at the age of 73 at his home at 100 Summit Street on Sunday morning, April 24, 1960. After the funeral at the H.E. Turner & Co. Inc. Mortuary in Batavia at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 28, 1960, Herbert was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Harvester Avenue, Batavia. The Rev. Robert F. Spencer, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Batavia, officiated at the services.

Herbert was survived by his wife, then a medical patient at St. Jerome Hospital in Batavia; two sons, Roger F. Baker of Wyoming and Dean F. Baker of 35 Dellinger Avenue, Batavia; a sister, Helen L. Baker of 141 Bank Street, Batavia; and five grandchildren.

Mabel died at the age of 76 at her home at 8773 Prole Road, Town of Stafford, Genesee County, at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 7, 1963. She had been in failing health for three years and seriously ill for about a month. After the funeral at the H.E. Turner & Co. Mortuary in Batavia at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10, 1963, Mabel was buried in Elmwood Cemetery. The Rev. Fremont L. Chapman, minister of the First Presbyterian Church, officiated at the services.

Mabel was survived by two sons, Roger M. Baker of Wyoming and Dean F. Baker of 8773 Prole Road, Town of Stafford; a brother, Arthur E. Miner of 10 Tracy Avenue, Batavia; a sister, Mrs. Frank R. Young (the former Edith Miner) of Miami, Florida; seven grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

ROGER MINER BAKER (10) is the son of Herbert F. Baker and Mabel M. Miner Baker (9). Roger was born at the Batavia Hospital, Batavia, Genesee County, New York, on August 15, 1924. His parents lived at 24 Thomas Avenue, Batavia. Roger lived in Wyoming when his father died on April 24, 1960, and when his mother died on Sunday, April 7, 1963.

DEAN F. BAKER (10) is the son of Herbert F. Baker and Mabel M. Miner Baker (9). Dean was born at the Batavia Hospital, Batavia, Genesee County, New York, on August 24, 1926. His parents lived at 24 Thomas Avenue, Batavia. Dean lived at 35 Dellinger Avenue, Batavia, when his father died on Sunday, April 24, 1960. Dean was physical director at the YMCA in Batavia. He lived at 8773 Prole Road, Town of Stafford, Genesee County, New York, when his mother died on Sunday, April 7, 1963.

ARTHUR EARL MINER (9) was the son of Seward H. Miner (8) and Ella Teege Miner. Arthur was born in Batavia, Genesee County, New York, on May 31, 1889. He was a farmer for much of his life. The 1900 federal census lists Arthur with his parents and siblings in the Town of Batavia. Arthur was then a student.

The 1910 federal census lists Arthur, 20, with his parents and sister, Mabel, on East Main Street Road, Town of Batavia. Arthur married Gertrude Elizabeth Miner at her home at 425 Elliott Street, Batavia, at 7:30 p.m. on June 27, 1911. The Rev. Donald B. MacQueen, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Batavia, performed the ceremony.

The daughter of Henry C. Miner and Lizzie Maxson Miner, Gertrude was born in the Town of Stafford, Genesee County, on April 18, 1891. Although Arthur and Gertrude had the same last name, they were not related. Gertrude graduated from Batavia High School and worked in the office of the Batavia Daily News before her marriage. After an eastern trip, the couple resided in a house recently erected next to the home of the bridegroom’s father. Arthur was to engage in farming.

Arthur and Gertrude had two children: Amelia Elizabeth Miner and Robert E. Miner.

The 1920 census lists Arthur E. Miner, 30, farmer; Gertrude E. Miner, 28, wife; Amelia E. Miner, 7, daughter; and Robert T. Miner, 2 8/12, son, on East Main Street Road, Town of Batavia.

Arthur lived on East Main Street Road when his father died on Tuesday, July 26, 1927, and when his mother died on Saturday, May 14, 1932. Arthur and Gertrude later lived at Woodstock Gardens Apartments in Batavia. Arthur and Gertrude were members of the First Presbyterian Church of Batavia. Gertrude was a member of the YMCA of Batavia.

Arthur died at the age of 97 at Genesee Memorial Hospital in Batavia on Thursday, July 17, 1986. His death followed a long illness. After the funeral at the H. E. Turner & Co. Mortuary in Batavia at 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 20, 1986, Arthur was buried in Stafford Cemetery, Transit Road, Town of Stafford.

Arthur was survived by his wife; a son, Robert Miner, of Kokomo, Indiana; a daughter, Mrs. Donald Weller (the former Amelia Miner), of Batavia; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

After a long illness, Gertrude died at the age of 95 at the Village Green Nursing Home, Le Roy, Genesee County, on Wednesday, October 8, 1986. After the funeral at the H. E. Turner & Co. Mortuary at 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 11, 1986, Gertrude was buried in Stafford Cemetery. She was survived by a son, Robert, of Kokomo, Indiana; a daughter, Mrs. Donald Weller (the former Amelia Miner), of 8660 Seven Springs Road, Batavia; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

AMELIA ELIZABETH MINER (10) is the daughter of Arthur Earl Miner (9) and Gertrude Elizabeth Miner Miner. Amelia was born in Batavia, Genesee County, New York, on April 26, 1912. Her parents lived on East Main Street Road, Town of Batavia. The 1920 federal census lists Amelia, 7, with her parents and brother, Robert, 2 8/12, on East Main Street Road. She was attending school.

Amelia married Donald Addison Weller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Merrill Weller of the Town of Stafford, Genesee County, at 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 31, 1935. The Rev. Paul S. Miller, pastor of the Stafford Methodist Church, performed the ceremony at his home. Mr. and Mrs. Francis Matthews of Le Roy attended the couple. After a trip west during which they visited Amelia’s brother, Robert, a student at Purdue University in LaFayette, Indiana, Donald and Amelia resided on East Main Street Road. Amelia lived in Batavia when her father died on Thursday, July 17, 1986.

ROBERT E. MINER (10) is the son of Arthur Earl Miner (9) and Gertrude Elizabeth Miner Miner. Robert was born in Batavia, Genesee County, New York, on May 6, 1917. The 1920 federal census lists Robert, 2 8/12, with his parents and sister, Amelia, 7, on East Main Street Road, Town of Batavia. Robert was a student at Purdue University, LaFayette, Indiana, when Amelia married Donald Weller on Thursday, October 31, 1935. He lived in Kokomo, Indiana, when his father died on Thursday, July 17, 1986.

He was a member and past president of the Genesee County Agricultural Society, a charter member of the Genesee County Cooperative Extension, a member of the Holland Purchase Historical Society, an honorary lifetime member of the town of Batavia Volunteer Fire Department, and the Older Boys Club of Attica.
