Purpose of Testing
This annual laboratory evaluation documents overall health at age 77 and provides the second baseline report in the Health Inventory. It expands upon the 2013 evaluation by including Hemoglobin A1c, urinalysis, creatine kinase, and magnesium testing, allowing broader assessment of metabolic, cardiovascular, renal, endocrine, and general health.
Major Findings
Metabolic Health
Results
- Glucose: 80 mg/dL
- Hemoglobin A1c: 5.9%
Interpretation
Fasting glucose remained excellent. However, Hemoglobin A1c increased into the laboratory’s “increased risk for diabetes” category (5.7–6.4%), suggesting the need for continued long-term monitoring despite normal fasting glucose.
Kidney Function
Results
- BUN: 23 mg/dL
- Creatinine: 0.93 mg/dL
- eGFR: 79 mL/min/1.73 m²
- BUN/Creatinine Ratio: 25 (slightly elevated)
Interpretation
Overall kidney function remained excellent. The mildly elevated BUN/Creatinine ratio occurred despite a normal creatinine and preserved eGFR and was not accompanied by other evidence of kidney disease.
Liver Function
Results
- AST: 39 IU/L
- ALT: 28 IU/L
- Alkaline Phosphatase: 67 IU/L
- Bilirubin: 0.4 mg/dL
Interpretation
Liver function remained within normal limits, although AST was near the upper end of the reference range. No evidence of hepatic dysfunction was present.
Complete Blood Count
Results
- WBC: 6.1
- Hemoglobin: 12.8 g/dL
- Hematocrit: 39.3%
- Platelets: 209
Interpretation
Blood counts remained stable with no evidence of infection or significant anemia. This report continues to establish the healthy hematologic baseline that preceded the inflammatory illness several years later.
Lipid Profile
Results
- Total Cholesterol: 215 mg/dL
- LDL Cholesterol: 138 mg/dL
- HDL Cholesterol: 63 mg/dL
- Triglycerides: 68 mg/dL
Interpretation
Compared with the 2013 report, total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol increased into the elevated range. Despite this change, HDL cholesterol remained high and triglycerides remained low—features that would become a consistent pattern throughout subsequent years.
Thyroid Function
Result
- TSH: 0.647 μIU/mL
Interpretation
Thyroid function remained within the normal reference range.
Cardiac Marker
BNP
Result
- 37.9 pg/mL
Interpretation
BNP was well within the normal range and lower than the 2013 value, providing continued evidence of stable cardiac status at the time of testing.
Prostate Screening
Result
- PSA: 2.3 ng/mL
Interpretation
PSA remained within the normal reference range and was essentially unchanged from the previous year.
Urinalysis
Routine urinalysis was normal.
No evidence of:
- Proteinuria
- Glucosuria
- Hematuria
- Urinary tract infection
Microscopic examination was not indicated because the screening urinalysis was normal.
Additional Testing
Creatine Kinase (CK)
- 110 U/L (normal)
Magnesium
- 2.1 mg/dL (normal)
These results showed no evidence of muscle injury and normal magnesium status.
Overall Interpretation
This report documents excellent overall health at age 77, with stable kidney, liver, thyroid, blood count, urinary, and cardiac findings. The two laboratory changes warranting future observation were the increase in LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol, and the Hemoglobin A1c of 5.9%, which falls within the laboratory’s increased-risk category for diabetes. These findings became important reference points for evaluating long-term cardiovascular and metabolic trends.
