One-Page Summary
Purpose of Testing
This annual laboratory evaluation documents overall health at age 78 and serves as the third report in the Laboratory Library. It provides another important pre-inflammatory baseline, approximately six years before the systemic inflammatory illness of 2021, allowing continued evaluation of long-term trends in metabolic, cardiovascular, renal, endocrine, and hematologic health.
Major Findings
Metabolic Health
Results
- Glucose: 87 mg/dL
- Hemoglobin A1c: 5.7%
Interpretation
Fasting glucose remained well within the normal range. Hemoglobin A1c improved from 5.9% in 2014 to 5.7%, although it remained at the lower limit of the laboratory’s “increased risk for diabetes” category. Overall glucose regulation remained stable.
Kidney Function
Results
- BUN: 21 mg/dL
- Creatinine: 1.06 mg/dL
- eGFR: 67 mL/min/1.73 m²
Interpretation
Kidney function remained stable and appropriate for age. The slight decrease in eGFR compared with the previous year was accompanied by a normal creatinine and does not indicate significant renal impairment.
Liver Function
Results
- AST: 25 IU/L
- ALT: 14 IU/L
- Alkaline Phosphatase: 73 IU/L
- Bilirubin: 0.5 mg/dL
Interpretation
All liver function studies were within normal reference ranges, demonstrating continued healthy hepatic function.
Complete Blood Count
Results
- WBC: 4.2
- Hemoglobin: 12.7 g/dL
- Hematocrit: 39.5%
- Platelets: 220
Interpretation
Blood counts remained stable with no evidence of infection or clinically significant anemia. These values continue to establish the healthy hematologic baseline before the inflammatory illness that occurred in 2021.
Lipid Profile
Results
- Total Cholesterol: 177 mg/dL
- LDL Cholesterol: 102 mg/dL
- HDL Cholesterol: 64 mg/dL
- Triglycerides: 53 mg/dL
Interpretation
Compared with the 2014 report, there was a substantial improvement in the lipid profile:
- Total cholesterol decreased from 215 to 177 mg/dL
- LDL cholesterol decreased from 138 to 102 mg/dL
- HDL cholesterol remained high
- Triglycerides remained very low
This pattern demonstrates favorable cardiovascular risk factors despite the mildly elevated LDL cholesterol.
Thyroid Function
Result
- TSH: 0.899 μIU/mL
Interpretation
Thyroid function remained normal and stable.
Prostate Screening
Result
- PSA: 2.7 ng/mL
Interpretation
PSA remained within the normal reference range and showed only a slight increase from the previous year.
Urinalysis
Routine urinalysis was normal.
No evidence of:
- Proteinuria
- Glucosuria
- Hematuria
- Urinary tract infection
Microscopic examination was not indicated because screening results were normal.
Magnesium
Result
- 2.1 mg/dL
Interpretation
Magnesium level was within the normal reference range, indicating normal magnesium status.
Overall Interpretation
This report documents excellent overall health at age 78. Kidney function, liver function, thyroid function, blood counts, urinalysis, and magnesium levels remained stable and within normal limits. Compared with 2014, lipid values improved considerably while HDL cholesterol remained high and triglycerides remained low. Hemoglobin A1c also improved slightly while remaining at the threshold for increased diabetes risk. Overall, this report reflects a healthy physiologic state several years before the onset of the systemic inflammatory illness of 2021.
Longitudinal Significance
This report contributed to the long-term trend analysis of:
- Blood counts
- Kidney function
- Liver function
- Lipid profile
- Glucose regulation
- Thyroid function
- PSA
- Magnesium
- Urinalysis
It confirms that multiple organ systems remained stable and healthy before the major health changes that developed later.
Clinical Importance
⭐⭐ Stable Pre-Inflammatory Baseline
This report reinforces the pattern of good overall health before 2021 and documents meaningful improvement in lipid values compared with the previous year’s evaluation.
